How to use this estimate
A board foot is a volume equal to a one-foot square board one inch thick. Confirm whether the yard prices nominal, rough-sawn or finished dimensions, then enter those pricing dimensions. Measuring a dressed board can give a different result from the volume basis used on its invoice.
The calculation
A worked example
Ten boards priced as 1 in × 6 in × 8 ft contain 40 board feet. At $5 per board foot, the lumber estimate is $200.
This calculates volume and entered-price cost only. It does not choose timber grades, structural spans, treatment, fasteners or connections.
Common questions
Is a board foot the same as a linear foot?
No. Linear feet measure length; board feet measure volume. Changing thickness or width changes board feet even when length stays the same.
