How to use this estimate

Enter the coverage of the selected sheet; a 4 × 8 ft panel covers 32 ft². Panel orientation and framing spacing affect cutting and joint locations. Subtracting openings reduces the area estimate, but small openings may not reduce the number of whole sheets required, so review a layout before purchase.

The calculation

Area = wall perimeter × height − openings + optional ceiling area. Sheets = round up(area × allowance factor ÷ sheet area).

A worked example

A 12 × 10 × 8 ft room with its ceiling and no deductions has 472 ft² of surface. At 10% waste and 32 ft² per sheet, buy 17 sheets.

Common questions

Does the number include both sides of a partition?

This room model counts the surfaces facing into one room. Calculate the other side separately if it also needs board.
