How to use this estimate

Measure the total width of the walls you will cover. This full-drop method does not deduct windows and doors because offcuts are not always reusable around them. Enter the physical length of the roll being sold, especially when a retailer describes packaging as a double roll. A zero repeat means a plain or random-match paper.

The calculation

Drop length = round up((height + trim) ÷ repeat) × repeat. Drops per roll = round down(roll length ÷ drop length). Rolls = round up(required drops ÷ drops per roll).

A worked example

A 12 m total wall width with 2.4 m walls, 0.1 m trim, 0.32 m repeat and 10.05 × 0.53 m rolls needs 23 drops. Each roll gives 3 drops; buy 8 rolls.

For straight-match patterns only. Half-drop, complex motifs, uneven walls and initial motif alignment can need extra material; confirm with the wallpaper supplier.

Common questions

Why not divide wall area by roll area?

A roll may have leftover length that cannot make another complete drop. Pattern matching can reduce usable coverage even further.
