How to use this estimate

Grout coverage changes with tile size, joint width, joint depth and the selected product. Obtain the coverage figure from its technical data sheet or manufacturer calculator for your exact joint geometry. The default is an arithmetic example only; it is not a universal coverage recommendation.

The calculation

Bags = round up(tiled area × (1 + waste / 100) ÷ manufacturer coverage per bag).

A worked example

For 100 ft² of tile, a grout rated at 50 ft² per bag needs 3 bags when you include a 10% allowance.

Do not use tile adhesive coverage in the grout coverage field. Epoxy grout kits and cement grout bags can have different yields and working times.

Common questions

Why do I need the product coverage?

A generic density formula can misrepresent product-specific yield. Using the supplier’s coverage estimate avoids pretending that all grouts perform identically.
