How to use this estimate

Enter actual sloped roof surface area, not the house floor area. Use the roof area calculator first if you only know the footprint and pitch. Three bundles per square is common but not universal; heavier products may differ. If your area already includes waste, set waste to zero here.

The calculation

Bundles = round up(roof surface area × (1 + waste / 100) ÷ bundle coverage).

A worked example

A 1,000 ft² roof with 10% waste needs 1,100 ft² of shingles. At 33⅓ ft² per bundle, buy 33 bundles.

Field shingles only. Starter strips, ridge caps, underlayment, flashing, nails, ventilation, disposal and labor are excluded. Complex roofs can need a different cutting allowance.
