How to use this estimate

Use the internal dimensions of a raised bed, excluding its timber or masonry walls. Account for drainage layers and existing fill by entering only the missing depth. Soil settles differently with composition, moisture and placement; the allowance is editable and is not a universal compaction factor.

The calculation

Fill volume = length × width × depth. Add the selected allowance, then divide by the bag volume and round up.

A worked example

A 2 × 1 m raised bed filled 0.3 m deep holds 600 L. At 10% extra, 660 L requires 17 bags of 40 L.

This estimates volume, not soil suitability or bed load capacity. Structural support for rooftop or balcony beds needs professional review.
